Introduction

The post graduate diploma in Textile Design aims at developing professionals for Textiles Industry, i.e., exports as well as domestic market. The programme inculcates comprehensive design, technical and CAD Skills as well as marketing and merchandising skills for Textile industry through classroom, professional projects and industrial training.

 

The Indian Textile Industry has an overwhelming presence in the economic life of the country. Apart from providing one of the basic necessities of life, the textile industry also plays a pivotal role through its contribution to industrial output, the export earnings of the country and employment generation. It provides direct employment to over 35 million people; and is the second largest provider of employment after agriculture.

 

The Textile industry has several segments such as Printing, weaving, knitting and Embroidery sector. The industry has vast spread in the areas of manufacturing of Garments, home furnishings and accessories. These sectors are considered employment intensive ones. There is a growing need for designers with technical and aesthetic proficiency as the textile industry is in need of professionals who have a wide range of roles and responsibilities.

 

Candidates

This programme attracts graduate from any discipline and those aspiring to enhance their previous design skills / industry experience. Students of PGTD will be trained to be ethical and professional designers. The students will be independent and mature designers in the areas of surface and structural design for all end uses of textiles, especially apparels, upholstery and home furnishings, fabric accessories and made ups. Pearl Academy of Fashion is a pioneering institute of fashion technology imparting quality education in the field of Textile Design as a Post Graduate course which is one of the courses offered out of many other professional courses. The Academy has always been student-centered and market-oriented, and, it is the considered policy of the academy to review and revise its curriculum to the developments and demands of the evolving market.

 

The program and assessment

The PGTD course is a two-year full-time study taught Programme. The Programme will commence in August each year and will consist of 120 credits of year 1 and same 120 credits of year 2. The Faculties of textile department are drawn from Indian and International institutes and industry supplemented by visiting professionals. International Designers, industrialist and speakers come frequently to take lectures and workshops with our students. The Faculties of Textile department is also involved in upgrading their professional skills by continuous trainings and higher education.

 

The Textile department at Pearl Academy of fashion is equipped with state of the art machinery and infrastructure to enhance the skills and knowledge of students in their design developments and exploration. Each core technique is supported with clean large practical labs such as weaving lab, with table looms and a Jacquard weaving loom. A testing lab with latest testing equipments for physical testing facilities of yarn and fabrics. A knitting lab with many Hand flat knitting machines and circular knitting machine. A printing lab with dark room and a six head flat bed transfer printing machine.

 

The curriculum of semester 1 aims to develop sensitivity in design and acquire basic knowledge, & skills for textile designing. The semester will have modules in application of basic principles of Textile design process , Visualization and presentation enhances skills for drawing and CAD. The modules on Research and Communication skills are essential learning for the overall professional skills. Semester 2 or Certificate semester continues with the core basic modules pertaining to certain technical/ design/ business subjects. The modules for this semester are- Textile Design- 1, Indian Crafts, Business Studies,  and one Elective where the choice basket carries two modules Dyeing and Printing techniques and Structure Design with advanced CAD. The mode of study at this stage is concept based.

 

Third or Diploma semester emphasizes on independent work and critical evaluation. There is greater emphasis will be laid on industry-based projects, workshops, & design projects. A 10 week industrial training will familiarize the students with the actual atmosphere, pace and discipline of professional practice and the working culture of the textile industry.

 

Semester 4 is for the final design project based on inputs of structural and surface design.. The Design collection is a juxtaposition of well researched and creative expressions, encompassing the entire learning of all the semesters. Students’ learning in this semester is self-driven and independent.


Placements and Industry interaction

Students of PGTD will be absorbed by the eminent well known national and international organizations as Textile Designers, Fabric Managers, Product developers , Embroidery designers or embroidery plotters, Fashion coordinators , Textile or home stylist , Textile Merchandisers , Textile Educators , fabric technologists.

 

Students undergo an 8 week industry internship where in they learn all the practical processes involved in manufacturing along with the commercial and business aspects of running an organization. Students are exposed to Live Industrial and craft projects which will be incorporated as classroom projects. Students are also taken to regular industrial visits for practical exposure and knowledge enhancement of classroom learning’s.
